The church of St John the Baptist is located at Gatão, approximately 5 km northeast of Amarante, with the majestic Serra do Marão as a backdrop. The cemetery contains the grave of Teixeira de Pascoas (1877-1952) the celebrated Portuguese poet who was born in Amarante. The origins of the church are still unclear but, whilst it is said that the original building on the site dates from the 9th century, it is generally accepted that the oldest portion of the Romanesque church still preserved is 12th/13th century. The restored bell tower is 17th century. This is a fascinating and intriguing building.
