The Gothic St John the Baptist Church is a National monument and the mother church of Alcochete; it dates from the 14th century. Modified in Mannerist style in the 17th century, its striking external features are a large rose window, a Manueline tower and at the rear, an exquisite tiled cross dated 1678, when the main altar was re-built. Internally there are interesting 18th century azuelojo tile panels depicting the birth of St John and the baptism of Christ and two early 16th century paintings which were brought here from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Matos.
