Originally the site of an iron age settlement, the castle stands on the highest of Lisbon’s hills. After occupation by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors as a fortress, it was later renovated and extended several times, being used as the royal palace until 1511. Severely damaged by the earthquake in 1755, it was eventually restored in the 1940s under Salazar’s regime. With its ten large towers, it offers fine views over the city. Festivals are frequently held in the castle grounds during summer.
