Some of the buildings in this wine lodge, which is also known as the Madeira Wine Museum, go back to the 17th century when the site was part of a Franciscan priory. The buildings surround a cobbled courtyard and the oldest Madeira wine cellar is on this site. It is possible to taste and buy wines, including some made on the premises more than 150 years ago. The museum’s collection includes a 17th century wine press, antique machinery, ancient vats and letters from famous personalities. The murals by German artist Max Romer depict wine related scenes.
