Founded by King Sancho II in 1242, it is one of the oldest examples of Franciscan architecture in Portugal. It was built in austere gothic style and was enriched by King Fernando in the 14th century when a fine large cloister was added. It was an important monument in the city and it was here in 1477 that João II took his oath as future king. Various other alterations have taken place over the ages but in 1834 the buildings were turned into the barracks of the Santarém Cavalry Regiment. Restoration work started in 1999.
