On the south side of the Praça da Republica is the imposing St Francis Church or, to give it its full local name, Igreja de Terceiros de São Francisco. Built in 1773, it has an Italianate façade and has the emblem of the order over the main entrance. The interior of the church has rich talha dourada decoration, a technique of gilding woodwork with gold leaf and the speciality of an Italian Nicolau Nasoni who was very active in Portugal. The azulejos depict the life of St Francis. The church is opposite an entrance to the pleasant Aquilino Ribeiro Park.
