The São Francisco church belonged to the first Franciscan monastery in Portugal. It was founded in 1212, whilst the saint was still alive, by Dona Sancha, the daughter of King Sancho I. Originally built on the site of the former town palace, when the monastery was enlarged by Dona Beatriz in 1280, a new church was built. The inside has a number of sculptures and paintings, including a notable ‘Virgin of the Chapter’. There is a fine Manueline cloister and the church portal is 13th century. One of the highlights is the Chapel of St. Sancha, next to the Chapter House.
