The small town of Varatojo lies 4 km west of Torres Vedras and is home to the Convento de Santo António. Founded in 1470 by King Afonso V for the Order of St. Francis, this monastery has been enlarged over the centuries, but the original façade and the Gothic doorway remain. The 1777 Chapel of Our Lady of the Oak Tree has interesting framed tile panels, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The double storey Gothic cloister also has artistic decorative features and the church has fine azulejo panels.
