The Igreja Santo António do Estoril is the town’s mother church and was built in the early 16th century on the site of an earlier building dedicated to São Roque. It has been the subject of two major catastrophes. As a result of the great earthquake of 1755 it was partly destroyed, but rebuilt between 1756 and 1758. After it was severely damaged by a disastrous fire in 1927, it was again rebuilt. The interesting Baroque façade remained intact, as did the decorated tile panels inside depicting scenes from St Anthony’s life.
