Built between 1694 and 1703 this church replaced the earlier St Anthony Chapel, part of which was incorporated into the chancel. The architect was Joaquim Jaime B. Ferreira-Alves, regarded as the foremost in his profession at that time. The tiles on the façade, its most striking feature, are modern and are the work of Jorge Colaço. They depict scenes from the life of St Anthony. Internally the chancel is dominated by a panel representing the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, created by João Baptista Ribeiro in the 19th century.
