Located 13 km southeast of Porto de Mos, the St Anthony caves were discovered in 1955, when workmen were chasing a bird. The entrance is at an altitude of 530 metres, but inside you descend 40 metres. The 6,000 square metres of caves were formed in the middle Jurassic age about 150 million years ago, in the days of dinosaurs, whose footprints can be seen in the area. The rooms of stalagmites and stalactites have names, such as ‘The Bat Room’ and ‘Fátima Room’ with its stalagmite resembling ‘Our Lady of Fátima’ carrying a child. The cave temperature is 17 ºC.
