Opposite the church of São José is the busy and attractive Praça 5 de Outubro. This almost quadratic square boasts in its centre, a pavilion and an old ironwood tree, planted in 1870. Since 1999, the Monumento ao Emigrante by Alvaro Raposo Franga adorns the south side of the square. It is a popular meeting place for the locals, especially on summer evenings, with frequent concerts taking place. It is also the centre for many festive activities on the occasion of the important Festa de Santo Cristo dos Milagres (fifth Sunday after Easter).
