Soure Castle is located approximately 20 km north of Pombal and surprisingly built, not on the top of a hill, but on flat ground on the bank of a river. It is thought that it may have been intended to defend a nearby monastery or the road to Coimbra. The central fortress remains are defined by the four corner towers and there is a Mozarab window and a Suevian-Visigothic gate. Much has still to be learned about the castle, the scene of many battles between the Moors and the Christians since it was built on a spot previously occupied by the Romans.
