Commemorating the Barcas Bridge tragedy, a bronze relief sculpture by Antonio Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942) can be found on the Ribeira wharf (Cais da Ribeira) close to the Dom Luis I Bridge. The tragedy occurred in 1809 during the Peninsular War, when the city was under siege by French troops under Marshall Soult. People, fleeing the advancing troops, crowded on to the pontoon bridge built across the Douro River in 1806, causing it to collapse with many lives lost. Tribute to the dead is paid by placing lit candles on the shelf below the sculpture.
