Sortelha, 12 km west of Sabugal, is a village where time appears to have stood still. Its stony narrow streets, granite houses and 13th century castle and surrounding walls (see separate entry) create an enchanting medieval atmosphere. The protective walls are circular on plan and the town’s name is derived from the Castilian word sortija (ring shaped). In front of the castle entrance there is a 16th century pillory with an armillary sphere on top. The 14th century parish church of Nossa Senhora de Neves has an interesting ceiling and a Baroque carved and gilded altar.
