The village of Sortelha is located about 12 km west of Sabugal and is entirely surrounded by its castle walls. Built in 1228 by King Sancho II on a 760 metre high peak and later renovated by Kings Dinis and Fernando, it was a an important part of the defensive line and there are stunning views from the keep. The entrance is through a Gothic doorway above which is Pilate’s balcony, with perforations through which burning oil and missiles could be hurled at attackers. You can walk on the castle walls of this superb example of an early Portuguese castle.
