Melgaço is in the heart of the region where the famous and unique vinho verde is produced and a visit to the Solar do Alvarinho is highly recommended. Here, whilst enjoying their paintings, sculpture and music, you can savour the many different varieties of this wine. Vinho Verde is medium in alcohol and is regarded as a summer drinking wine which, it is claimed, has great digestive properties. The Solar do Alvarinho building dates from the 16th century. At one stage a prison, it was the old Melgaço town hall.
