The 18th century baroque Nossa Senhora do Socorro Church, also known as Santa Maria Maior, was originally the Santiago Chapel. The chapel was built after a renewed outbreak of plague which followed the earthquake of 1538. No further outbreak has taken place since the 1st May that year and a pilgrimage takes place on this date annually. All that remains from the original chapel are an exotic wood and silver sacrarium and a 16th century cross now displayed in the Sacred Arts Museum. The facade of the present church is most attractive, with entrance doors that are a notable feature.
