Now dedicated to the noted Porto sculptor Soares dos Reis, the museum started life in 1833 when it was established by Don Pedro IV. Known originally as the Museu Português it was declared a national monument in 1940 and moved to what was previously site of the royal Palácio dos Carrancas (built at the end of the 18th century). The art collection is of particular importance, but also on display are glassware, gold, silver work and many other objects.
