Originally part of a 12th century monastery, now closed, the church was built between 1582 and 1627 and inaugurated in 1629. As a result of the 1755 earthquake the cupola collapsed. The building was restored in 1855 and became the pantheon of the Bragança dynasty. King Carlos I and his son Felipe, both of whom were assassinated in 1908, are buried here, as is his wife Amelia, the last Queen of Portugal, who died in 1951. The spectacular tiles in the church are of great importance. The carved ivory statue of Jesus is from the former Portuguese colony of Goa.
