São Vicente is on the north coast of Madeira approximately 32km northwest of Funchal. The tiny chapel here is most unusual in appearance and fills a niche in a large volcanic rock surmounted by a cross. It was built in 1694 by Inácio de Sousa at the river estuary, on the exact spot where the saint is said to have appeared. Around the church there is a nice garden with footpaths, flowers and a pond. The sea here is rough and popular with surfers.
