The original Sebastião Chapel was built about 1490, in what is now the Largo do Miradouro and it was there that the parish of São Sebastião was created in 1553. Severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, the chapel was eventually demolished at the end of the 19th century. With the banning of religious orders in 1834, the seat of São Sebastião parish was moved to the abandoned São Domingos Convent which, whilst it had also undergone repairs, retained its Jesuit style structure. The façade is balanced but relatively austere; however the interior is decorated in the Rococo and Neo-classical style.
