This aqueduct is about 1 km long with 21 arches and was used to bring water from São Sebastião to Coimbra; it is listed as a National Monument. Built during the reign of King Sebastião (1557-1578), it was completed in 1568. The project was the work of Filippo Terzi (1520-1597) who was Italian born, but lived in Portugal and became the royal architect (Mestre das Obras de el-Rei) in 1590. He was responsible for many other projects in Coimbra and Lisbon. The aqueduct is also known as the ‘Arches of the Garden’.
