São Salvador da Gândara Church lies about 12 km south of Penafiel and is Romanesque in style, dating from the 12th/13th centuries. The foundation of the church has traditionally been attributed to Infanta Mafalda (1190/1200-1256), the daughter of King Sacho I, although there are some stylistic doubts on this point. Internally, the vegetable and zoomorphic decorative treatment of the capitals and scrolls of columns is interesting. The church is known locally as ‘Cabeça Santa’ rather than ‘Gândara’, linked to a relic which was stolen in the 20th century. The original bell tower was removed during restoration in the 1950s.
