When, in 1175, Estevão Martins ordered São Salvador Church to be rebuilt, it was already an important part of Coimbra’s Romanesque heritage, having been founded in 1064. An inscription at the door confirms this reconstruction. The Romanesque ground floor plan was preserved and still exists. Other remaining features include the internal animal and geometrical figure decoration. Extensive internal rebuilding took place in the 16th century and the façade of the collegiate church was altered in the 17th century. The blue and white azulejo tiling covering the church dates from the 18th century and is dedicated to the theme of Salvator Mundi.
