Once the island’s second largest town, São Roque still shows signs of its historical importance, such as its heritage of religious buildings and its many interesting houses that were built in their own unique style. Pico once provided harpooners to the American whaling boats, which came to hunt for sperm whales until the end of the 19th century. After this, the activity was continued by the island’s own inhabitants, who ventured to sea in narrow rowing-boats. The old quay opposite the old whaling factory, which is used by local fishermen, provides a regular passenger boat service to the neighbouring island of São Jorge.
