Northeast of Vila do Porto, and positioned almost exactly in the middle of the island, is the pretty village of São Pedro. This part of the island is extremely fertile land and the village is surrounded by many attractive trees and, in fact, the huge palm tree in the centre of the hamlet is a landmark. The area is recommended for lovers of nature and also as an example of how the Azores used to be, but this tiny village also boasts a 17th-century church, the Igreja de São Pedro, which is simply beautiful inside.
