It is appropriate that a church dedicated to St Peter, the patron saint of fisherman, is the parish church of Faro. Built in the 16th century on the site of a 15th century mariners’ chapel, it was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake. Fortunately much Baroque decoration survived, including the main altar piece from 1689. The chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento has another fine altar with a central image of the last supper. It also has a sculpture of St Anne teaching a young Virgin Mary how to read.
