The original church on this site, in the historic centre of Trancoso, was built in 1320. Work on the present São Pedro Church, the Igreja Matriz, commenced in 1720. Inside is the 1621 tomb of the local shoemaker, poet and writer Gonçalo Anes, who wrote the celebrated and prophetic work ‘Trovas’ under the name of Bandarra. The Baroque decorated exterior is relatively plain, but inside, the painted vaulted ceiling and the carved wood altarpieces are of interest.
