Located about 6 km south of Sintra, São Pedro Church was rebuilt about 1565, on the orders of Dom Álvaro de Castro, son of the Viceroy of India. The most notable feature of this single nave church is the 18th century blue and white azulejo tiling to its walls, depicting scenes from the life of St Peter. Other items to be admired include a 15th century sculpture of St Peter and a late 17th century ivory figure of Christ. The Baroque entrance bears the coat of arms of Archbishop Dom Tomás de Almeida, who endowed the church with many important works.
