St Peter’s Church was built in the late 13th early 14th centuries, but was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake. After reconstruction, only the bell- tower and its spiral staircase and the gilt wood carved altar and throne, dating from1690-1705, remained of the original building. There is an excellent altarpiece by the painter João da Costa. The famous painter Josefa de Óbidos (1630-1684), who lived most of her life in the town, is buried here, as is Father Francisco Rafael Silveira Malhão (1794-1860).
