Located close to the castle walls, the São Pedro Chapel was built around 1176 and was intended for worshippers whose homes were outside the city boundary. The last remaining example of the Romanesque architecture in Leiria, it has a single nave and the carved capitals and archivolts to the portal are characteristic, as is the carved stonework internally. The church was at one stage home to the Bishop of Leiria and, after the abolition of religious orders in 1834, it was used as a theatre and a warehouse. Restoration work took place between 1933 and 1937 and the building is classified as a National Monument.
