The present São Nicolau Church was built between 1671 and 1676 on the site of the previous chapel, which had become the parish church after the creation of the St Nicolau parish in 1583. Following a fire in 1768 some changes were made during restoration. The façade is interesting with Tuscan columns which run the full height of the building, focusing attention on the ornate central section. The retable has a beautiful image of St Eligius, the patron saint of metalworkers. This is the work of the Porto-born sculptor Custódio de Sousa Santos for the Fraternity of Goldsmiths and dates from 1762.
