Located next to the Chaves football stadium, the 17th century São Neutel Fort was built as a defence against possible Spanish invasion, at the time of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668). Constructed on Vauban principles, the fort was not connected to the Chaves defensive system and was therefore provided with a second external wall and a dry internal moat crossed by means of a solid stone bridge. The granite walls are 7-10 metres high and 1.5 metres thick. The small chapel inside has an annual pilgrimage and, although no longer actively used by the military, the fort still belongs to them.
