This museum, inaugurated in 1955, is in the village of Odrinhas, 11 km from Sintra; it is also an archaeological site which dates back as far as the mid 16th century. The museum area is more than 15,000 m2, 3,500 m2 of which are covered and provide not only space for permanent displays, but also a library, bookstore, temporary exhibition hall and auditorium. The site houses the ruins of the Roman villa of São Miguel de Odrinhas and the megalithic sanctuary of Monte da Barreira. Its epigraphic collection is regarded as the most complete and important in Portugal.
