Built in 1527 on the orders of Miguel da Silva, prebendary of the Santo Tirso monastery who owned the São João da Foz estate, the tower and chapel of São Miguel-O-Anjo is designated a building of public interest. Although now on dry land, when originally constructed it was on a rocky island in the Douro River. The cupola over the chapel is reached via a spiral staircase. The tower was built as a navigational warning light and an inscription translates: the priest sold some of his own fields, using the money to keep a bonfire burning perpetually on the tower.
