This small simple Romanesque chapel, built in coursed dressed stone, dates from the 12th century. It lies between the Castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança and has been restored. It is believed that King Afonso Henriques was baptised in this chapel. The floor is paved with burial stones, marked with crosses, shields and spears of noble warriors who fought with Afonso in founding the nation. Mass is celebrated here annually on the king’s birthday.
