Constructed in 1577 on the orders of King Sebastian, Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo is located at the far end of the Sítio promontory. It was built as protection against the attacks of pirates and was enlarged in the 18th century to the present shape, which is determined by its rocky site. There is a statue of São Miguel Arcanjo above the entrance door dated 1644. The fort became a symbol of local resistance when the population ousted the occupying Napoleonic troops during the first French invasion in 1807/1808. The lighthouse was installed here in 1903.
