The village of Praia, now renamed São Matéus, is the second most important place on the island due to its harbour. São Matéus also had a yacht marina and the village’s white sandy beach, from which it originally took its name, is the main bathing venue for the islanders during the summer months. From the village, the beach and the harbour cannot be seen, as they are hidden by a massive jetty wall, built for protection from sea storms and pirates. The beach is accessed through a gate. The town’s picturesque old streets and buildings recall its past importance.
