The Romanesque stone chapel of São Martinho is one of Covilhã’s most important local monuments and dates from the 12th /13th centuries, about the time the town was founded. Rectangular on plan, it has a number of interesting features. There are two rare painted panels depicting St Christopher and St Lawrence and an 18th century painting of the Crucifixion. The Spanish-Moorish tiles date from the 16th century and there are traces of what are believed to be medieval frescoes on the altars.
