The present 18th century São Marcos church and hospital were designed by local architect Carlos Amarante (1742-1815) and replaced an earlier church and hospital for pilgrims and the poor. Amarante is famous for his work on Bom Jesus do Monte, amongst other projects in the city. The imposing church façade, with its twin towers, is in complete harmony with the hospital buildings. A central niche contains a statue of St Mark, whilst life size statues of the Apostles line the complete front elevation. Archbishop Diogo de Sousa is buried in the main chapel in a mosaic patterned white jade tomb.
