Located in the old town of Atouguia da Baleia, 6.5 km southeast of Peniche, the Gothic style parish church of São Leonardo dates from the 12th century and is the oldest Christian church in the Peniche area. Legend claims that it is built from the bones of a whale that ran ashore. The architecture makes use of mythological creatures and other decorative details, both externally at the attractive portal and internally. The tomb of the first Count of Atouguia, Dom Álvaro Gonçalves de Ataíde and the fine carving of the Nativity on the front of the main altar are other features.
