The 16th century São Julião da Barra Fort was part of the maritime defence line built along the Lisbon coast to protect the entrance to the River Tagus. The star shaped fort is the largest and most complex example of a Vauban fort still intact in Portugal; it has been modified and enlarged over the ages. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was used as a political prison, where a succession of Jesuits, Liberals and Absolutists were incarcerated. As it is an official residence of the Minister of defence, consult the tourist office about visits.
