São José das Taipas Chapel is located in the Rua Dr. Barbosa de Castro, close to the São Bento da Vitoria Monastery. Built to the neo-classical design of Carlos Amarante (1742-1815), construction commenced in 1795 but was only completed in 1878 with some amendment to Amarante’s plans. The church has a single nave and a barrel vault roof and is well known for its crib. There is a memorial painting of the Barca bridge tragedy and an older and valuable one of Our Lady of Divine Providence from the German school.
