The 18th century baroque São João Novo Palace was built for Pedro da Costa Lima, a royal court nobleman. Previously thought to be the work of Nicolau Nasoni, it has now been established that the architect was in fact António Pereira. In the 19th century the building and its courtyard were extended to the west. Since 1945 the palace has housed the Porto Ethnology museum. The building suffered from neglect until the late 20th century, when staged renovation and reorganisation commenced. The ornate main façade and the interior staircase are notable features.
