The original theatre was opened in 1798. Built for Francisco de Almada, it is said in honour of opera singer and beauty, Mlle Guitini, it was designed by Italian architect Vicente Mazoneschi. This theatre was destroyed by fire in 1908 and totally rebuilt three years later by the architect Marques da Silva (1869/1947). His design incorporated several features new to Porto architecture and the theatre is regarded as one of the most significant buildings in the city. It is here that many of the most important cultural events take place.
