Located 17 km southeast of Lamego, the 12th century São João de Tarouca was the first Cistercian monastery in Portugal. In the 12th and 13th centuries its benefactors included King Afonso Henriques and, with its vast estates, it enjoyed great prosperity. Following the banishing of religious orders in 1834, the chapter house and cloister were demolished and today, the church apart, there are only ruins. Important features are the decorated tomb of the Count of Barcelos, bastard son of King Dinis, and the 18th century azulejo panels. There is also a remarkable St Peter by the artist Grão Vasco (1475-1542).
