The Mannerist buildings of the Albergaria de São João de Deus were built in 1659 by Luisa of Medina-Sidonia (1613-1666), regent for her son Afonso VI until 1662. Built as a hospital for the wounded in the Restoration wars, it was afterwards handed over to the São João de Deus religious order until 1716. Restored and altered in the period 1787-1795, when the oratory and chapel were demolished, it has been subject to many other alterations and has served many purposes. It was once a hospital for the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and at present houses the fire brigade.
