São João da Pesqueira is about 31 km east of Tabuaço and close to the River Douro; Pesqueira is the Portuguese for fishing and the name comes from a lake once full of fish. The Romanesque church of Santa Marinha at Trevões, 18 km to the southwest, has an 18th century bell tower and is notable for the corbelling in its chancel. The 16th century São Salvador do Mundo Sanctuary 3 km to the northeast, consists of ten small chapels the last at a height of 711 metres, a breathtaking viewpoint over Cachão da Valeira and the River Douro.
