The São João da Foz Church originally belonged to the Benedictine monastery of St Thyrsus and the present church, which dates from the 18th century, had a number of predecessors. The austere façade has twin belfries and a niche containing a statue of St John. There are eight fine retables in the nave but that at the high altar is the masterpiece; it dates from 1734 and is the work of the master carvers Manuel da Rocha and Manuel da Costa Andrade.
